Though national defense spending bounded to $700 billion in fiscal 2018 and $716 billion in fiscal 2019 under the Trump administration, Pentagon officials confirmed they have been ordered in recent days to prepare a $700 billion budget for fiscal 2020. The Pentagon plans to continue preparing a $733 billion budget, in line with previous plans.

Another instance of the ratchet effect? I’m sure that the FY 2020 authorization comes in at or above the Pentagon’s plans of $733 billion (TY). Any takers on a $50 bet?
DOD topline budget jumped more than $100B in two years, from $612B in FY 2017 to $716B in FY 2019. Shown here is President’s Budget request from Feb 2018. |
The FY 2019 budget request in February was at $686 billion. It got funded to $716 billion, a nice 4% bump.
Now, if the DOD gets funded to $733 billion, that doesn’t mean they won’t have to replan. Politics will in part decide what specific programs get bumps and which get decrements.
